Our favorite food to recommend for husky puppies is undoubtedly Ollie. And both the fresh and even their dry food has a good amount of protein and contains zinc gluconate, which is one of the best forms of zinc for huskies.

Their options for fresh food consist of a variety of amazing wholesome ingredients like chickpeas, green beans, kale, cranberries, sweet potatoes, apples, and many more. Their protein sources for fresh food consist of lamb, beef, chicken, turkey, and pork. Their baked food’s protein sources are beef and chicken. And their fresh food in particular has upwards of 35% protein!

A quick note on fresh and wet food:

At first glance, it might seem that dry kibble has a significantly higher protein content than that of canned, wet, fresh, or raw food. However, it is important to note that kibble is measured on a dry matter basis. Because of this, fresh or wet food can’t accurately be compared without doing a bit of math. This is because of the moisture content in the food!

For example, the listed guaranteed protein analysis is 10% in Ollie’s Lamb Dish with Cranberries. But their baked food has a guaranteed protein analysis of 23%. To figure out how the two foods actually compare in protein value, you have to first subtract the moisture percentage of the food from 100%. Then you divide the protein percentage by the percent of dry matter percentage. Then multiply that number by 100. So, Ollie’s lamb dish has 10% protein and 74% moisture. When we do the math, we’ll find that when accounting for the moisture, the guaranteed protein analysis is actually about 38%.

Best Dry Dog Food For Husky Puppies

👉 Taste of the Wild High Prairie Puppy Recipe

Puppies seem to absolutely love this dog food! Moreover, owners seem to love it just as much as the puppies for all the health benefits that this food boasts. What I especially love about this food is that it has such a strong focus on only using whole protein sources and natural ingredients.

The very first ingredient is water buffalo which is an amazing protein source. And it also contains even more whole protein sources like roasted bison and roasted venison. It has a 28% protein content which is within the ideal range for an active husky puppy!

I also love that it is grain free because some huskies do, unfortunately, seem to have sensitive stomachs, which sometimes can be attributed to various grains often found in dog foods. Instead of using carbohydrate sources like wheat or grain, Taste of the Wild uses things like beans, peas, and sweet potatoes to provide those necessary carbohydrates. If your husky has a sensitive stomach, make sure you see our recommendations for the best dog food for huskies with a sensitive stomach.

Another great aspect of this food is that it contains zinc proteinate and zinc sulfate, which are two of the more bioavailable sources of zinc for dogs. If your husky has zinc deficiency, make sure you read our recommendations for the best dog food for huskies with zinc deficiency.

Moreover, it’s not just me that is a fan of this food! There are tons of positive reviews that can easily be found online that share amazing stories from people who have fed this food to their dogs and have seen a substantial improvement in their dog’s health.

✅ Pros:

  • Multiple whole protein sources
  • High protein content
  • Contains good sources of zinc

❌ Cons:

  • On the more expensive side

Best Wet Dog Food For Husky Puppies

👉 Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy Wet Dog Food

Canned food can be a great option for puppies, especially if they happen to be a little bit fussy about what they are willing to eat. Wet food often is a little bit more appetizing because of the smell!

One of the best canned dog foods on the market right now for husky puppies is Blue Buffalo Wilderness Turkey and Chicken Grill. This food is grain-free and free of any gluten, by-product meals, corn, wheat, soy, artificial flavors, and preservatives. I like that the first ingredient is real turkey, followed by chicken broth, chicken, and chicken liver. It also includes potatoes for carbohydrates as well as peas and even fish oil, which has all sorts of health benefits for puppies.

✅ Pros:

  • Whole protein sources
  • High in protein
  • Great for dogs who aren’t easily motivated to eat

❌ Cons:

  • While it may smell good to our puppies, it can be a bit smelly for us humans!

Dog Food To Avoid For Husky Puppies

Unfortunately, there are many brands of dog food on the market today that just don’t provide adequate nutrition for our husky puppies.

An example of this is Purina’s Puppy Chow. The first five ingredients are listed as follows: whole-grain corn, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, whole-grain wheat, and beef fat. There is no real whole protein source listed anywhere on the ingredient list!

Moreover, the final ingredient listed is garlic oil. 😱 According to most circles and the Merck Veterinary Manual, garlic is toxic to dogs. While the amount Purina is putting into the food is likely incredibly small, it still seems like an unnecessary risk to me.

So best to avoid this particular dog food product from Purina!

FAQ

Do husky puppies need large-breed dog food?

No, husky puppies don’t need large-breed dog food. Huskies are most often considered medium-sized dogs rather than large breeds.

Large-breed dog food is more often geared towards the really big breeds like Great Danes, Great Pyrenees, or Mastiff breeds. Large-breed food would likely not have the right nutritional profile for husky puppies.

Instead, it’s better to focus on choosing a food that is made up of high-quality protein sources, healthy grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Should huskies eat dry or wet dog food?

Huskies can be fed either dry or wet food, depending on your preference and your dog’s needs. Both options have their advantages and considerations.

Dry food, also known as kibble, offers convenience as it’s easy to store and serve, and it doesn’t require refrigeration. It can also promote dental health by reducing tartar buildup through chewing. Dry food is generally more cost-effective and calorie-dense, making it suitable for huskies that require more energy.

On the other hand, wet food, whether canned or fresh, contains higher moisture levels, which helps keep huskies hydrated, especially if they don’t drink enough water. Wet food can be more palatable to some dogs due to its stronger aroma and flavor. It also has a softer texture, making it easier to eat, and one of the best dog foods for older huskies with dental issues or picky eaters.

How long after eating do husky puppies poop?

Husky puppies typically have to go poop very quickly after eating. However, this can vary in time between immediately after eating to up to thirty minutes after eating. While it can be difficult to predict when your puppy will go to the bathroom after eating in the beginning, over time, you’ll learn your puppy’s tendencies!

And, if you can establish a consistent feeding routine and bathroom schedule, it’ll make potty training so much easier. By trying to stick to a consistent schedule and by monitoring your husky puppy’s behavior and bowel movements, you can better understand their unique patterns and adjust their schedule accordingly.

How often do husky puppies need water?

Like all puppies, husky puppies require regular access to clean and fresh water throughout the day.

How often huskies should drink water depends on factors such as the puppy’s age, size, activity level, and environmental conditions.

Generally, it is recommended to provide water to husky puppies multiple times a day, ensuring it is always available to them.

What kind of dog food should you feed a husky puppy?

Though it would be nice, there is no one perfect dog food for husky puppies. Every breed is different, and every husky may have unique dietary needs based on various factors like activity level, age, or health conditions.

However, there are some things to keep in mind in order to choose a dog food that will work great for your husky puppy. First, you’ll want to ensure that the food is “complete and balanced” or, in other words, is made according to the standards set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials

Secondly, look for food with a higher protein content and a moderate fat content. You’ll also want to look for food with natural, wholefood ingredients as opposed to food with highly processed ingredients, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

And finally, since huskies often tend to have sensitive stomachs, it might be beneficial to look for a grain-free or limited-ingredient diet. Grains and various other ingredients like corn, wheat, and soy don’t present as much nutritional value as other foods might, and they can be a bit difficult for some dogs to digest.
