Appearance

Both parent breeds are considered medium to large-sized dogs. The Belusky will likely look lean, strong, and athletic with perky triangular ears and a slender face.

Color

Siberian Huskies can have a wide variety of colors and patterns. Some examples include sable and white, red and white, black and white, gray and white, as well as black and agouti, and they can even be entirely white.

Belgian Malinois have several common colors as well though they don’t typically have the patterning that a Husky would. Belgian Malinois breed standard colors are fawn, mahogany, red, red sable, and fawn sable.

The Belusky can be any sort of mix between these two breeds, from being a solid color all over to having a pattern and colors.

Their eyes will often be a medium to dark brown but can also take on the blue that many huskies have. Moreover, their eyes can also be different colors.

Coat & Shedding

When combining the Medium length coat of the Husky with the short coat of the Malinois, the result is sometimes a pup that looks quite similar to the dog breed known as the Belgian Tervuren, which is similar to the Malinois in many ways.

The most distinct difference is their medium-length coat and fluffier appearance. Of course, a pup could also inherit either one of the parent breeds’ coats but regardless, the pup will be a shedding breed of dog. However, Beluskies are one of the Husky mixes that don’t shed as much as other Husky mixes.

Size

The breed standard for Belgian Malinois is a height of 22 to 26 inches and a weight of 40 to 80 pounds, with the females being smaller in stature and lighter in weight than the males.

Siberian Huskies’ breed standard is 20 to 23.5 inches in height and 35 to 60 pounds, with the females, also being shorter and lighter than the males.

Beluskies will likely fall between the two being 20 to 26 inches tall and weighing 35 to 80 pounds.

Temperament & Personality

Beluskies are spirited dogs with lots of energy. They are incredibly intelligent and eager to please.

From their Malinois side, they have a propensity for acting as protectors and guard dogs and are incredibly loyal to their family.

They may also inherit the Siberian Husky’s friendliness towards everyone they meet, but they will keep a watchful eye and definitely let their family know when a stranger is near.

Lifespan

A Siberian Husky’s expected lifespan is about 12 to 14 years. A Belgian Malinois’ expected lifespan is 14 to 16 years.

As can be seen, by their significant lifespans, both breeds are overall quite healthy dogs. A mix between the two can be expected to have a similar lifespan of about 12 to 16 years.

Intelligence

Beluskies are highly intelligent and easily trainable dogs. They form strong bonds with their humans and are always ready to learn whatever it is their humans want to teach them. Just look at their long list of careers! These pups are ready to learn anything.

Activity Level

These dogs are highly active. It is an absolute necessity for them to get plenty of activity and be busy throughout the day. Beyond just getting plenty of activity and exercise, these pups need mental enrichment as well.

Mental enrichment can come in the form of playtime with their human by playing games like fetch, playing with other dogs, and playing with interactive toys like treat puzzles and snuffle mats.

Are Belgian Malinois Husky Mixes Good With Kids?

They are generally good with kids, but since they are so energetic and excitable, they can easily wreak havoc and knock little ones over when playing.

It is important to note, however, that Beluskies do have strong herding instincts and high prey drives, so it’s possible that without proper training, they may have an instinct to herd and nip.

Speed, Strength, Endurance

Beluskies can best be described as being the ultimate athletes. They are fast, strong, and can have endless endurance for both work and play. All thanks to their hardworking and athletic parent breeds!

Behavior

Since Beluskies are intelligent, energetic, and mischievous, they can sometimes find themselves in a spot of trouble when their needs aren’t being met. They need a job to do, games to play, and plenty of exercise to keep them happy and healthy. Without it, they can quickly develop behavioral problems like excessive barking, digging up the garden, etc.

Beyond just being highly energetic, they also have an incredibly strong prey drive and may develop a bad habit or have a tendency to try to chase small animals like the family cat or the neighborhood rabbits and squirrels.

Starting training early on and keeping them well-exercised and mentally stimulated will help ensure that they are always on their best behavior.

History & Origin of the Belgian Malinois Husky Mix

Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky dog breed has a long and storied history dating back 4,000 years. They are descended from the dogs bred by the Chukchi people of northern Siberia. These dogs were used for transportation by means of pulling sleds across the frozen tundra that were loaded with goods and supplies necessary for the Chukchi’s survival.

Beyond this, they were also essential in providing companionship and, of course, warmth to their human companions during the freezing winters. Beginning in the 1800s, they started to become known to the rest of the world and ultimately became famous after a team of sled dogs in 1925 transported life-saving medicine to a village in need some 658 miles away and in only five and a half days’ time! The names Balto and Togo are famous for huskies now as they were just two of the many dogs who made the dangerous trip.

Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois comes from the city of Malines, Belgium. They are a breed of dog that has been highly tuned to become the perfect livestock herding dog for shepherds and cattlemen.

In the early 1900s, they were brought to America and started to grow in popularity. Today, they still have their herding instincts and are often used for their original purpose.

However, many have had a career change and are more commonly known for being police and military K-9s!

Only in more recent years have Siberian huskies and Belgian Malinois been bred together. Even then, Beluskies are not very common dogs.

More than likely, Beluskies are born from accidental litters when pets aren’t spayed or neutered. But they can sometimes come from breeders.

How to Take Care of a Belgian Malinois Husky Mix

Nutrition

Beluskies require a diet that is rich in high-quality protein, as well as essential fats, vitamins, and minerals. It is best to avoid any dog foods that contain filler ingredients like corn, soy, or wheat.

Beluskies will typically eat about two to three cups of high-quality dog food per day. But it is usually best to follow the feeding guidelines given by your chosen dog food brand.

Exercise

Siberian Huskies and Belgian Malinois are highly athletic and energetic breeds that need at least 1 hour of exercise every day.

Various ways to exercise a Belusky include going for long walks or hikes, running or jogging, swimming or dock-diving, playing fetch, and even participating in agility courses.

Additionally, many can be trained to run alongside you on long bike rides, which is a great form of exercise for both you and your dog!

Because this breed of dog is so highly active, it can be difficult for the average person to meet their needs. A good option is to invest in sending your Belusky to doggie daycare or doggie day camp a few days a week. This way, your pup can socialize and exercise by playing with other dogs!

Grooming

Depending on the specific coat type that a Belusky inherits, they may have different grooming requirements.

If they inherit the husky coat with its thick double coat and tendency for heavy seasonal shedding, you’ll want to invest in some high-quality brushes and brush a few times a week, if not every day. This could include a comb, a bristle brush, and a deshedding comb or rake.

If the coat is more similar to that of a Belgian Malinois, a Belusky may not require as much brushing. But it is still good practice to brush them at least every week. In the case of a Belgian Malinois coat, a rubber curry brush is usually the ideal option.

They also may benefit from the occasional bath, especially if they are heavy shedders since baths with deshedding shampoo and conditioner can significantly decrease shedding.

Training

Training will be the absolute most important thing you do with your Belusky. Without proper training, they can develop some chaotic tendencies. Start training early on and focus on using positive reinforcements like the reward of a favorite toy or a favorite treat.

Finding what motivates a Belusky is often necessary to make training that much easier. Some dogs don’t care about treats, while others go crazy for a treat. Others think that the best reward is getting to play with their favorite toy.

Since Beluskies are such an active and intelligent breed, it can be both easy and a bit difficult to train them. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help from qualified trainers!

It is better to get a strong start on training than have to go back and fix undesirable behaviors later on in a dog’s life.

Belusky Puppies

The puppy stage is both the most fun and the most exhausting part of owning a dog. These little pups are a ton of work, requiring lots of time, dedication, and training.

Remember to start training right away, including crate and potty training. Stick to a regular schedule and let the pup out frequently, so he or she has plenty of opportunities to go potty outside.

Also, always start with the basic commands like coming when called and staying put, as well as commands like “down” and, of course, “drop it.” Beluskies catch on quickly, so you’ll quickly be able to move on to the fun tricks like roll-over and spin!

General Health

Overall both parent breeds of the Belusky are quite healthy dogs. However, there are some health concerns that both the Belgian Malinois and the Siberian Husky may be more likely to experience that can be passed down to their pups.

Health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and they are also more prone to being sensitive to anesthesia which can make undergoing surgery slightly riskier for them.

Siberian Huskies have much the same health concerns, and as such, Beluskies can experience some of those same possible health concerns.

Belgian Malinois Husky Mix Price

As mentioned, Beluskies are not a very commonly seen dog, so it can be difficult to predict how much one might cost.

Generally speaking, Huskies cost somewhere between $600 and $1,200, depending on the breeder. For a Belgian Malinois puppy, the lowest price would be somewhere around $1,000 but could go up to as high as $4,000 or even more. Though they are growing in popularity, they are not a very common breed which drives the cost up higher.

The price of a Belusky puppy will likely fall in the range of $800 and $1,500.
