How Many Huskies Are There In The World?
How many Huskies are there in the world?

How many Huskies are there in the world, you ask?

According to unofficial estimates, there are 1 million to 5 million Huskies in the world today. The exact population of Siberian Huskies is difficult to calculate because the majority of these dogs live in remote locations all over the world.

Although this figure may appear to some to be a little high, it is justified due to the breed’s popularity not only in North America but also in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia.

Our Formula for Determining Siberian Husky Population

Here is the formula we created to determine the Husky population in each country.

Siberian Husky Registrations (yearly average) x Average Lifespan = Estimated Husky Population

Using this formula, we estimated that there are one million to five million Huskies in the world. Note that because there is no official data detailing the real population of Siberian Huskies, most husky statistics are only estimates based on dog registration figures from different countries’ kennel clubs and their popularity and demand in certain countries.

The Popularity of Siberian Huskies

The majority of Siberian Huskies live in northern countries where the climate is cold all year. This is because Siberian Huskies prefer to live where it is snowing!

Siberian Huskies are among the most popular dog breeds in the world because they are active, playful, loyal, and beautiful dogs who make excellent companions. According to a survey of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, Siberian Huskies ranked 19th in 2021.

Which Country has the most Siberian Huskies?

Based on the number of Siberian Husky registrations from various kennel clubs around the world, including AKC (American Kennel Club), UK Kennel Club, and others, we can state that the USA currently has the most Siberian Huskies with an estimate of 200,000 to 250,000.

Which Continent has the most Siberian Huskies?

Based on the fact that the majority of Siberian Huskies are registered in the United States and Canada, we assume that North America has the greatest number of Siberian Huskies.

Huskies are popular in the United States and Canada because the climate benefits them, and dog owners prefer them over other dog breeds since Huskies require less maintenance in frigid environments.

Asia has the second largest number of Huskies with a healthy population of Huskies in China, Pakistan, India, and a few more nations.

Europe has the third largest number of Huskies in nations like the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, France, and others.

Australia also has a sizeable population of Siberian Huskies.

Africa has the least Siberian Huskies because most African countries have a warm climate, which does not favor the Siberian Husky, and because the Siberian Husky is an expensive dog, most people over there are unable to purchase this dog due to their unstable economy.

Some people believe that because Antarctica has a lot of ice and snow, there might be Huskies living there, but this is completely wrong. There are no Huskies in Antarctica because there is no human population and the only people who live there are researchers.

The northern hemisphere is home to the majority of the world’s Huskies.

Siberian Husky Population

The following is a list of nations and their estimated Siberian Husky populations. These numbers, however, are not official and are based on the number of Siberian Huskies registered in various kennel clubs throughout the world, such as the American Kennel Club (AKC), The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom, and a few others.

These figures don’t include Huskies living in the wild. Most of these figures include an additional 25% assuming that 1 in 4 Siberian Huskies aren’t registered. However, this is likely significantly more outside the US.

CountriesHusky Population
USA200,000 to 250,000
China50,000 to 100,000
UK10,000 to 12,500
Australia6,000 to 7,500
Norway4,500 to 5,500
Pakistan200 to 2000

USA

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) dog registration records, about 300,000 Siberian Huskies were registered between 1991 and 2008. Despite the fact that these numbers are old, we can use them to estimate the current population of Siberian Huskies in the United States.

Note that we can only estimate the population of Siberian Huskies because the AKC has not given any official data on their website on dog registration statistics after 2008.

So, the average number of Husky registrations over the years from 1991 and 2008 is 16,666 (300,000/18). Now multiplying the average number of registrations per year (16,666 registrations) with the average age of a Husky (12 years old) we get 200,000 Siberian Huskies!

So, based on the dog registration figures from 1991 to 2008, we can estimate that there are ~200,000 registered Siberian Huskies in the USA.

If we also combine the estimated unregistered population of Huskies (assuming 1 in 4 aren’t registered), the total population of Siberian Huskies in the USA is between 200,000 and 250,000.

China

According to a recent survey, Siberian Huskies are one of the most popular dog breeds in China, with approximately 16% of dog owners favoring them in 2021. There are around 27,400,000 pet dogs in China.

Given the popularity of Huskies in China, we estimate their number to be in the range of 50,000-100,000.

Australia

According to Dogs Australia (a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of purebred dogs through ethical breeding), there were 6,083 Siberian Huskies registered in Australia between 2010 and 2021.

Therefore, the average number of Husky registrations from 2010 to 2021 is 506 (6,083/12). Multiplying the average number of registrations (506 registrations) with the average age of Siberian Huskies (12 years old) we get a population estimate of 6,083.

If we include unregistered Huskies (assuming 1 in 4 dogs aren’t registered), we can estimate ~6000 to 7500 Siberian Huskies in Australia.

UK

According to Kennel Club of the UK dog registration records from 2012 to 2021, around 8510 Siberian Huskies were registered. Because these are the most recent figures, we can obtain a decent estimate of their current population in the UK.

So, according to our formula, the average number of registrations from 2012 to 2021 is 851 (8510/10). Now multiply the average number of registrations per year (851 registrations) by the average age of a Siberian Husky (12 years old), and we get an estimated population of 10,212 Siberian Huskies.

So, based on registration numbers from 2012 to 2022, there will be almost ~10,000 registered Siberian Huskies in the UK. However, if we include the population of unregistered Huskies (assuming 1 in 4 aren’t registered), we may estimate that there are between 10,000 and 12,500 Huskies in the UK.

Norway

According to dog registration data from 2010 to 2020, Norway had 4064 registered Siberian Huskies.

According to our formula, the average number of Husky registrations from 2010 to 2020 is 369 (4064/11). Multiplying the average number of registrations (369 registrations) with the average age of Siberian Huskies (12 years old) our estimate of registered Siberian Huskies is 4,433. If we include unregistered Huskies, we can estimate that there are 4,500 to 5500 Siberian Huskies in Norway.

Pakistan

According to the Kennel Club of Pakistan, there are currently 177 registered Siberian Huskies in Pakistan. In Pakistan, the percentage of unregistered Siberian Huskies is likely high, therefore when combining registered and unregistered, there could be ~200 to ~2000 Siberian Huskies.

Siberian Huskies have a small population in Pakistan because they are expensive dogs that require a lot of maintenance during the summer, which is why not many people in Pakistan can afford them as pets. Summers in some parts of Pakistan are also harsh, which is not ideal for Siberian Huskies.

The Challenge of Estimating Siberian Husky Populations

Siberian Huskies are one of the toughest dog breeds in the world, capable of surviving in subzero temperatures. Huskies are categorized as “working dogs” and are commonly used as sled dogs in some parts of Siberia and Alaska.

Because the majority of Siberian Huskies are kept by tribal people in remote areas of Siberia, Alaska, and Canada, determining their exact population is difficult. Many huskies kept as pets in cities and towns are not registered, making it even more difficult to obtain an accurate population estimate.

Final Figures

According to unofficial estimates, there are currently 1 million to 5 million Huskies in the world, and the exact population is difficult to calculate as most of these dogs live in remote locations worldwide.

The popularity of Siberian Huskies is due to their active, playful, loyal, and beautiful nature, making them excellent companions. North America, particularly the USA, has the most Siberian Huskies, followed by Asia, Europe, and Australia, while Africa has the least.

The estimated population of Huskies in the US is around 200,000 to 250,000, while China has an estimate of 50,000 to 100,000, and the UK has an estimate of 10,000 to 12,500. Note that these figures are based on unofficial estimates and registration figures from different countries’ kennel clubs.
